Allergens

  • Are Cocomels allergen-free?

Our entire line of products is made without gluten, egg, dairy, peanuts or tree nuts; however, our caramel is made with coconut milk, which is sometimes classified as a tree nut.  Because our products are manufactured on equipment which is also used to process dairy, peanut, egg, wheat and tree nuts, we cannot guarantee they are always 100% free of these allergens. However, we do have an allergen cleanse protocol and testing which is implemented between the production cycles of our products and other products which may contain allergens. This allergen cleanse reduces the potential for cross contamination on production machinery.

  • Are Cocomels made in allergen-free facilities?

No – while Cocomels are made without gluten, egg, dairy, peanuts and tree nuts, they are produced in facilities which also produce allergen-containing items. However, we have an allergen cleanse protocol and testing which is implemented between the production cycles of our products and other products which may contain allergens. This allergen cleanse reduces the potential for cross contamination on production machinery.

  • Are Cocomels dairy free?

Cocomels are made without dairy, using coconut milk instead of dairy milk. However, they are manufactured on equipment which is also used to process other products which may contain dairy, so we cannot guarantee Cocomels are 100% dairy free.  We do have an allergen cleanse protocol and testing which is implemented between the production cycles of our products and other products which may contain allergens. This allergen cleanse reduces the potential for cross contamination on production machinery.

  • Are Cocomels corn free?

Yes – our Cocomels are sweetened with organic cane sugar and free from high fructose corn syrup. If you are looking for a cane and grain-free option, try our coconut sugar caramels, sweetened with coconut sugar and tapioca syrup instead of cane sugar and brown rice syrup.

  • Why do my Cocomel Bites or Chocolate Covered Cocomels have white scuff marks?

Since we want our Cocomels products to be a plant-based, USDA Organic certified product, we choose not to use glazes which give them a shinier, polished finish.  Most glazes are non-organic.  Because of this, Cocomels Bites do typically have a white, white scuff marked appearance.  Additionally, our Bites are covered in chocolate via “panning”, which tumbles the coconut milk caramel center as chocolate is sprayed onto them. As a result, Cocomels Bites are born rolling and tumbling over each other, leading to inevitable scuffs.  Additionally, if chocolate gets hot (above 80 degrees), it can melt. If it cools again, a whitish coating appears called “bloom”. This is from the cocoa butter migrating to the surface of the chocolate and crystallizing.  You can still eat this, but the experience isn’t quite as good as perfect chocolate.  You can learn more about white scuff marks and “bloom” here.

<1g Sugar Cocomels

  • I thought Cocomels had a 'sugar free' option, what are <1g Sugar Cocomels?

Good question! You're right, in 2020 Cocomels launched Sugar Free Caramels--the first of our vegan coconut milk caramels to be made with an allulose and monk fruit sweetener blend instead of cane sugar. While Sugar Free Cocomels tasted indescribably delicious, our team was on a quest to create an even BETTER tasting cane sugar alternative Cocomel. And this year, we achieved an optimized taste while delivering a product that meets the needs of consumers looking to reduce or eliminate sugar from their diets. In the first few months of 2021, you'll see some packaging updates to both the Original and Sea Salt 'Sugar Free' Cocomels as they transition to <1g Sugar Free Cocomels. As always, our nutrition panels are up to date on each product page, and feel free to reach out to cocomels@madsweets.com with any additional questions. We're happy to help!

  • What sweetener is used in place of sugar in <1g Sugar Cocomels?

<1g Sugar Cocomels are sweetened with allulose and monk fruit, versus other traditional sugar alternatives like stevia and erythritol. We used this blend because the taste profile is closest to regular cane sugar, and it doesn’t have the cooling aftertaste associated with erythritol and stevia.

  • What is allulose and where is it derived from?

Allulose is a sweet, plant-based carbohydrate with the same taste profile as regular cane sugar – but without the calories. Unlike other carbohydrates, allulose is not metabolized. Additionally, allulose doesn’t have the cooling aftertaste associated with erythritol and stevia. Our allulose is derived from corn and goes through a refinement process.

  • What is monk fruit?

A small melon native to Southeast Asia, monk fruit is over 100x sweeter than sugar, without the calories. We used monk fruit in addition to allulose in our sugar free caramels to match the taste profile of regular cane sugar.

  • What about the dark chocolate in <1g Sugar Chocolate Covered Cocomels, is free of cane sugar too?

Yes! Our team worked hard to create a better-for-you, cane sugar free dark chocolate to accompany our <1g Sugar Cocomels Caramel. The dark chocolate is made with allulose instead of cane sugar for an indescribably delicious, sugar free dark chocolate!

  • <1g Sugar Cocomels Vegan Friendly?

Yes, <1g Sugar Cocomels are a Vegan Friendly candy.

  • <1g Sugar Cocomels Keto Friendly?

Yes, <1g Sugar Cocomels are a Keto Friendly candy.

  • Do <1g Sugar Cocomels contain sugar alcohols?

No, <1g Sugar Cocomels do not contain sugar alcohols.

  • My <1g Sugar Cocomels taste surprisingly sweet, do they really contain less than 1g sugar?

Yes, <1g Sugar Cocomels contain less than 1g of sugar per serving, and are indescribably delicious!

  • Why do <1g Sugar Cocomels contain 9g of Carbohydrates?

<1g Sugar Cocomels contain 9g of carbohydrates due to the inclusion of allulose, soluble tapioca fiber and prebiotic fiber (chicory root).  Unlike other carbohydrates, allulose is not metabolized.
